The Nelson Mandela Legacy Foundations

On the day of the announcement by Mr Nelson Mandela of a scaling-back of his schedule of public appearances, it was considered appropriate that the three 'Nelson Mandela legacy organisations' should take the opportunity to provide further clarity on the specific role and work of each.

They were to clarify how they will be operating together as an interlinked 'family' of independent institutions working toward a common overarching goal. This provides to the public, a clear picture of the core purpose of each of the Nelson Mandela legacy foundations.

Planning has been under way for some time to determine the optimum co-operative structure for these legacy organizations and has involved intensive discussions among the leaderships of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund, and the Mandela Rhodes Foundation.

The central purpose and role of each organisation can be described in brief as follows.

THE NELSON MANDELA FOUNDATION

The Nelson Mandela Foundation (NMF) was created to meet Nelson Mandela's immediate need for a personal office and is in the process of converting its core function to that of a 'Centre of Memory' for the life and times of Mandela.

THE NELSON MANDELA CHILDREN'S FUND

Through the development of empowerment programmes and initiatives, this Nelson Mandela legacy organisation endeavours to improve the way society treats its children and youth.

THE MANDELA RHODES FOUNDATION

The Mandela Rhodes Foundation is committed to its aims of building exceptional leadership capacity in Africa through its various leadership development programmes.
