Cape Town, 28 March 2024. The Mandela Rhodes Foundation (MRF) is pleased to announce the appointment of three new Trustees to its Board, effective April 2024. Mr Mustaq Brey, Ms Peggy Sue Khumalo, and Dr Rethabile Melamu join the esteemed group of people dedicated to advancing the Foundation's mission of nurturing young African leaders.

These new appointments follow the recent announcement of Chair Prof Njabulo S. Ndebele's decision to step down at the end of March 2024, after nearly 21 years of tireless service (including 10 as Chair).

Incoming Chair Justice Kate O'Regan said: "We are thrilled to welcome Mustaq Brey, Peggy Sue Khumalo, and Rethabile Melamu to the Mandela Rhodes Foundation Board." She said further that "their diverse backgrounds, expertise, and commitment to youth empowerment will greatly enrich our work as we continue to support the development of visionary African leaders."

Says Mustaq Brey, who brings extensive experience in business and philanthropy: “I am elated to serve as a trustee of the Mandela Rhodes Foundation, an organisation that through its collective effort in developing future leaders, has given hope to the continent and the next generation of leaders. I am proud to serve an organisation whose core values are aligned to Madiba and that his legacy, as enshrined in the objectives of the organisation, will continue to inspire and nurture great future leaders.”

Peggy Sue Khumalo, a trailblazer in the financial sector, echoed these sentiments and said: “The legacy of Nelson Mandela and Rhodes Trust serves as a beacon of hope and unity, and I am committed to upholding their vision through my contributions to the Foundation's endeavours.”

Rising leader in the field of social entrepreneurship Dr Rethabile Melamu commented by saying: “Africa’s wealth and prosperity does not only lie in its abundance of its natural resources, but in the richness of its youthful population. It is such an honour for me to join this incredible mission of building young generations of conscious leaders as a Trustee of The Mandela Rhodes Foundation, to unleash Africa’s immense potential.”

Judy Sikuza, Mandela Rhodes Foundation CEO, says: “We are delighted to have Mr Brey, Ms Khumalo, and Dr Melamu join our Board, all of whom have served on various committees at the Foundation. Each new Trustee brings a wealth and diversity of experience and expertise that we are confident will add enormous value as the MRF continues to grow and expand our impact across the African continent.”

The three new Trustees’ passion for Africa and dedication to driving positive change align perfectly with the Foundation's values. The Mandela Rhodes Foundation looks forward to the invaluable contributions of its new Trustees as it continues to empower African youth to lead with integrity, purpose, and vision.
