Athenkosi Nzala

South Africa & University of Cape Town, 2019

Athenkosi Nzala, a 2017 Civil Engineering graduate, is a remarkable young man who is passionate about uplifting young people and giving them the guidance and mentorship they need to help them succeed in life by exposing the multi-potential in them. Athenkosi comes from Bisho in the Eastern Cape where he attended Bisho High School. He joined UCT in 2012, and over the years committed himself to his studies and has done well academically. He has been a two-time recipient of the Engineering and the Built Environment Special Faculty Award and the LeadSA June Hero awards. He has also, during his graduation, received the well-renowned Faculty award for the student with remarkable contribution towards the undergraduate degree. Athenkosi is the founder of AfrikaCan! Foundation. The Foundation provides story-telling and mother-language tutoring, mentorship programs and builds learning platforms for learners and communities to expose their multipotential. These platforms range from coding, entrepreurship, design thinking, sustainability thinking, etc. He is aiming to build these platforms online through AfrikaCan! Foundation website as he registers for his master’s degree in education policy and online learning design. In October 2018, after the terrible fire in Khayelitsha, Athenkosi was very concerned about the young school children, especially the matric students who needed hope and help to get them through their final exams. He provided tutoring and rallied the community to get involved. He believes that if the youth are equipped with knowledge and compassion, we can conquer anything.
