Elijah Mumba was born and raised in a small village called Mutale, in the Northern part of Zambia. He attended university in Lusaka, graduating from his undergraduate studies as one of the top students in B.A. Economics with Mathematics in 2017.
While studying at the University of Zambia, he co-founded Escalate Leadership, a network aimed at providing a range of online and in-person mentoring solutions for young people, including students in secondary and higher education.
In February 2020, Elijah was chosen as one of 55 young leaders selected from across Zambia under the USAID Youth Lead training and civic engagement activities. As a youth leader, he has worked extensively with others to identify challenges faced by various communities in Zambia and try to provide solutions through youth-led capstone projects. Under this program, Elijah has also worked as a Research Assistant in the Human Development Unit at the Zambia Institute for Policy Analysis and Research (ZIPAR). Prior to joining Youth Lead and ZIPAR, Elijah worked for Atlas Mara Bank in 2018 and later joined Bank of Zambia in 2019 as a Statistical Assistant in the Economics Department.
In 2021 Elijah will be attending the University of Cape Town to pursue a Master of Commerce, specialising in Economic Development. Upon completion of his Master’s degree, he aspires to continue working with rural communities, and to help young people unleash their potential, particularly in Zambia.
