Nthati Mabena was born and raised in Mamelodi South Africa and considers the vibrant township her favourite place in the world. She is currently completing her BA degree in Anthropology and Philosophy and will be completing her honours degree in Anthropology in 2021. She is passionate about social justice advocacy, design, art and pop culture. She is invested in African development and believes that young people should be at the forefront of change. She is constantly thinking about ways to use art, design and pop culture to tackle issues of social justice.
Nthati is also passionate about social entrepreneurship and wants to fulfil the needs of communities by providing services and products that are culturally sensitive, environmentally sustainable and economically empowering. She has been on a responsible entrepreneurship learning journey with the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation for the past two years.
Nthati loves to travel and draws inspiration from the everyday person. Her dream is to see as many people as possible expressing their identity without fear of repression. She is proudly African, queer, feminist and living with mental illness. Nthati wants more young people to be honest and open about their lived experiences and to form support communities to remove stigma and shame from our societies one day at a time. She likes to think of herself as a life-long learner, dreamer and a rebel with a cause.
