Kenya & Stellenbosch University, 2018
Lewis Waswa is an ‘energy enthusiast’ who believes that the access to affordable and reliable energy is key to the achievement of the sustainable development goals. He understands that socio-economic progress of any society is anchored in the access to affordable and reliable energy to all. Prior to enrolling at Stellenbosch University, Lewis worked with several Engineering firms in Kenya. Notable mentions include Howard Humphreys Consulting Engineers East Africa (currently SNC Lavalin Kenya), where he worked on the Renewable Energy Penetration Assessment in the Northern pastoral counties. Later in 2017, he worked for Solargen Technologies (EA) Limited, a Renewable Energy EPC as a mini grid design engineer. While at Solargen, Lewis worked on projects aimed at increasing accessibility of energy to marginalized communities as well as those communities situated in inaccessible terrains. He designed and implemented several solar powered water projects mainly in the arid counties of Kenya as well as Somalia. He is a Registered Graduate Electrical Engineer by the Engineers Board of Kenya and a licensed off-grid and grid-tied solar PV systems ERC inspector.
His research is focused on local grid sustainability in the increasing uptake of intermittent generations. He is a student member of South African Institute of Electrical Engineers, a 2019 GenX Energy Innovation presenter and a 2018 attendee of the Energy of the Future Summer School in Oldenburg, Germany. He is an associate member of the Old Starehian Society.
In his free time, Lewis enjoys playing soccer and touching souls with quiet poetry.
