Zipho Falakhe

Zipho Falakhe is a Masters in Public Health student in the Division of Social Behavioral Science at the University of Cape Town. Her undergraduate qualification is in Gender Studies and Sociology. She is a volunteer at Dream Factory Foundation and fulfills the role of key facilitator for the #BeTheDream program. DFF is a Non-Profit Organization that works with youth at Risk in several schools in the Cape Flats area; assisting vulnerable youth to realize their dreams. Zipho is from Khayelitsha, a place whose dominant narrative is crime, poverty and disease. She is on a pursuit to change disempowering narratives and is thus passionate about youth and women empowerment as well as sustainable development. In 2016, she was selected as a Mellon Mays Fellow as part of the UCT cohort. The fellowship included a summer conference in Atlanta, at Emory University in 2017; where fellows engaged in discussion pertaining to transformation in Higher Education. In June 2018, she presented her Honours research paper titled 'Teenage pregnancy, Media and Representations: Contemporary Representations of Black Femininity through dominant media discourses on teenage pregnancy', at the Social Science Research Council Graduate Summer Conference in New York hosted at Columbia University. Her broad research interest lies in Women’s Health/Wellbeing. She aspires to have her own Non-Governmental Organization that tackles the disproportionate vulnerabilities faced by women in Africa.
