Alfateresia Mwasangama

Tanzania & University of Cape Town, 2024

Alfateresia Peter Mwasangama is a medical doctor and researcher who enjoys reading great leaders’ biographies and writing health-based short stories. She graduated from Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences and completed her internship at Muhimbili National Tertiary Hospital. She is an aspiring epidemiologist with a focus on infectious diseases among pediatrics and adolescents.

Inspired by the leadership style of the patriotic African leaders, Alfateresia defines leadership as a responsibility and not merely an opportunity to hold a leadership title. It is an umbrella term that entails sacrifice, selflessness, reconciliation, and the ability to have a positive impact on the community.

Alfateresia has honed her leadership skills throughout her academic journey. As a unit leader and a treasurer, she ran a three-year project between Tanzanian and Danish medical students which advocated for sexual reproductive health and rights among adolescents in secondary schools in Dar es Salaam. She participated in organizing the fifth regional non-communicable scientific conference that called upon scientists from all over Africa to discuss matters concerning non-communicable diseases. She has been engaging in research activities within and outside the university, and most recently, she was awarded a research grant from the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.

Alfateresia is also a member of Afyatoon Company which digitalizes health information through the illustration of cartoons and animations that convey health information in a simple local Kiswahili Language to the community.
