Masilo Matlakala

South Africa & University of Cape Town, 2026

Masilo is a dual-degree student at the University of Cape Town, pursuing a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) alongside a Master of Medical Science in Neuroscience. He aspires to become a neurosurgeon and medical scientist, developing solutions for complex health challenges across Africa. His academic excellence is reflected in continuous placement on the Dean’s Merit List, First Class Honours, and awards including the Harry Crossley Research Fellowship.

A dedicated leader, Masilo chairs Academic Affairs for the Postgraduate Health Sciences Student Council and represents students on the Faculty Board and Teaching and Learning Committee. He drives social impact through roles with Friends of Médecins Sans Frontières and UNICEF UCT, mobilizing humanitarian action.

Passionate about mentorship, he has guided first-year students, facilitated problem-based learning, and tutored within the Human Biology Department, earning the UCT Gold Leadership Excellence Award. He is founding a society to empower medical students toward social responsiveness.

Masilo focuses his neuroscience research on motor system disorders and aims to leverage digital health technologies to improve diagnostics and care access across Africa. Outside academics, he enjoys the beach and music.
