Saba Gebreseilassie

Nigeria & University of Cape Town, 2026

Saba Gebreseilassie is an emerging neuroscientist with a passion for research and a curious mind. She has obtained a BSc in Biochemistry and Chemistry with distinction at North-West University and is completing a BMedSci (Hons) Neuroscience and Physiology. Her honours research focus is on Cryptococcus neoformans infections and the dynamics of oxygen deprivation in neural tissue post-infection in a mouse model.

Saba’s scientific foundation spans molecular biology, neurophysiology, and she aspires to one day branch into systems neuroscience and computational approaches to brain function. Her academic curiosity orbits around the central question: how does the brain build, preserve, and sometimes distort consciousness?

Beyond the lab, Saba has served on a student chapter, served as a peer mentor and tutor, and has played a role in the African Research Society UCT Chapter 2025 term, serving as PR Director and leading digital strategy, science communication, and public engagement efforts that highlight African-led innovation.

Saba now aims to complete a Master’s in Neuroscience, integrating experimental and computational methods to better uncover the mysteries behind Cryptococcal infection of the brain. Grounded, forward-thinking, and endlessly curious, she envisions a future where African neuroscience contributes boldly to the global understanding of mind and meaning.
