Sinoxolo Gcilitshana passes away at age 27

It is with great sadness that the MRF confirms the passing of 2019 Mandela Rhodes Scholar, Sinoxolo Gcilitshana.

Following reports of his death, we were today able to speak to Sinoxolo’s family, who confirmed that he has indeed passed away. The information available suggests that his death was caused by an attempted robbery at his home. However, the family is still investigating and working to bring further information to light.

Sinoxolo, like many of our scholars, had big dreams. It is very sad that he will not be able to realise them. Sinoxolo’s family, and particularly his young daughter, are in our thoughts, and we have extended our condolences.

Update 04/12/2022: the Gcilitshana family has confirmed that a funeral will be held for Sinoxolo on the 10th of December 2022, in Vaaldraai, Qoboqobo (Kaiskammahoek), Eastern Cape. Interested members of the Mandela Rhodes community can contact the family at nobulumnkog@gmail.com.
